New Year Commitments

2013, huh!?

I have been inspired by my friend Lexi's dedication to keeping up her blog this year to make a quick post of my own. I have a bunch of draft ideas saved in my evernote, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I haven't gotten around to most of my other New Year's Resolutions either. I promise I'm not just a total flake, but I have had exams this week (which I finished this morning), and even after all this time they still completely knock the rest of my life out of order.

So, today is really my new year. In the spirit of making positive changes and moves forward, I thought I'd share my list of, what I am terming, New Year's Commitments.

1. Commit to Fitness.
I know that this is at the top of most people's lists, but for me this is a serious deal. I have been making positive fitness steps over the last 6 months, but I decided to use the arbitrary beginning of a new period to really kick it up a notch. It hasn't entirely gone to plan so far, due to aforementioned exams, but I am entirely determined to get there. At the very least, I've been drinking 2 litres of water every day. If this is a goal you share, you can follow my fitblr.

2. Read 1 Book Per Month.
I totally stole this from Lexi, but I have told her so that's okay. Now it's just borrowing. I am terrible for reading books, I either forget or fall asleep. I thought that one a month would be a reasonable target. I'm currently reading A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. I read it a few years ago for college but I have no memory of it since I passed that exam. I also have an audiobook of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad on the go, as narrated by Kenneth Branagh (okay, so my motives aren't entirely pure...) I have goodreads, but I'm not too good at keeping up with it.

3. Find A Job.
This one has actually gone spectacularly well. I applied online for a job at a local cinema on the 2nd of January. I was given the job on the 11th & signed the contracts on the 12th. My induction is at the beginning of February, which means I can finally start paying off my debts! I have also been asked to do some paid architectural history research which I am super stoked about, but I will tell you more about that when I know more myself!

4. Italian Lessons.
I have been saying for years that I want to learn Italian so that I can do a few months in Florence/Rome/etc. I always start strong but then lose it a bit. Determined to at least complete the basic level of conversational Italian this year.

5. Go To 2 New Places.
This one presents difficulties due to aforementioned AWFUL money situation. I have, however, splashed out on a wee trip to Copenhagen at the end of February which my best friend & I booked in a moment of pure and fantastical spontaneity. One down, one to go!

6. Commit to My Photography.
This one is going to be the biggest challenge for me, I think. I am taking my camera to be cleaned next month, & hopefully I will buy a new lens once I'm solvent again. I'm really keen to work on some conceptual/arts stuff, rather than my usual snapshots, & I actually had my first genuine ideas for the first time the other day. They're not new, but they're still ideas. I really need to put a lot of effort in to understanding how my camera works & how to get the best from it. I take some nice photographs, which I'm proud of, but I don't truly know my camera.

I hope that everyone else's New Year Commitments are going to plan, & feel free to bully me on twitter/tumblr/instagram/etc into making sure I keep up with mine!

  1. You bully me into working out and I'll bully you into blogging. Deal?

    1. Totally a deal! If, like me, you like to have an app for everything, try this: http://ftcy.me/nVxQTL - although I've been pretty bad at keeping up with it lately.
